This is Part 1 of a 2-Part Study. Part 1 focuses on Air Conditioning.
Class 1: Orientation and Expectations
- Expectations: Dress code, what to bring, participation
- Tool inventory: Each student will be required to bring the appropriate tools to class. We will do an inventory of each student’s tools along with a brief description of how and why they are used.
- Safety: Lab tour and first aid station location and types of hazards (Safety glasses will be available)
Class 2: Basic Electricity Part 1
- Understanding wiring diagrams and air conditioning
- Basic circuits: Parallel and series
- A/C components: relays, pressure switches, contactors, relays, capacitors
- Troubleshooting compressors
- About condenser motors
- Lab skills: Practice using a voltage meter to practice troubleshooting methods
Class 3: Refrigerant
- Types of refrigerants
- How refrigerants work
- Air conditioning cycle
- Lab skills: Practice using a manifold
Class 4: Charging
- Understanding pressure temperature and superheat charts
- What is superheat and sub-cooling
- Lab skills: Practice superheat charging on a live equipment
Class 5: Troubleshooting
- How to troubleshoot an air conditioner with a manifold, voltmeter and a thermometer
- How to check proper airflow
- Lab skills: Practice all the troubleshooting procedure on a live unit
Class 6: Maintenance
- Types of chemicals used in hvac industry and how to use them safely and effectively
- Types of air filters: Why we use them and what happens if we don’t
- Lab: Practice proper cleaning procedures on live equipment
